There was a time, a few years ago, when all I wanted to do was write. And I did write, almost constantly (much to the dismay of my boss, I’m sure lol). I wrote on my computer, I wrote in notebooks, I wrote on scraps of paper. I wrote original work, but most of all, I wrote fan fiction. Fan fiction for those of you who don’t know what it is, is writing new stories for pre-existing characters from books, movies, comics, video games etc.
My particular fandom of choice was Roswell, followed by Harry Potter and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There were a couple of other dabbles from other shows, but mostly, it was Roswell.
I wasn’t a good writer, I wasn’t a BNA (Big Name Author in fandom speak), but I had fun taking characters created, and lovingly nurtured by Melinda Metz in books and murdered by Jason Katims on screen and giving them new adventures.
But as time went by, I stopped writing. My life got busy, my kids got very busy and I just got wrapped up in everything else. But then a strange series of coincidences happened, and have kind of made me thing about writing again.
I’ve started receiving feedback (the payment to the fan fic writer’s soul) on my old stories again, and people have asked me to finish the story that I left incomplete. Then I actually had a couple of twitter conversations with Melinda Metz (and my fan girl heart hasn’t stopped squeeing yet) about the incredible story Fate that she’s posting at her blog. And if you’re not reading this – you need to rectify that immediately. Seriously, it’s that good. I actually have some time to call my own this summer, not having to work for a change, a friend I work with shared her fandom writing with me, and most amazing of all, a plot bunny popped into my head out of nowhere. A plot bunny is a story idea for those of you who are not familiar with fandom speak.
So I’m thinking this may be the time to start writing again. Open the writing folder on the computer and stuff a notebook into the beach bag for those days we hit the beach, and see what happens. Or, maybe not. I’m not sure yet. What do you think
