I know, I know you’re probably thinking does she have the right blog. Doesn’t stuff like that belong in Think Positive 30, and I’m going to say nope because I’m taking about the amazing power of the mind and TUNA FISH. Yep, you read that right, tuna fish.
I know, it sounds nuts, but I was making some tuna this morning for breakfast (yeah, weird I know, but I don’t eat breakfast food – especially at breakfast) and I started thinking about tuna. When I was a kid, I LOVED tuna sandwiches. Then one day, I was eating at the upstairs neighbors, and Mrs. Quintilianni served spaghetti and in the tomato sauce was TUNA. Now, I was raised to eat and not complain when i was a guest at someone’s home, so I choked it down, went downstairs to my house and promptly threw up.
In my mind (and my stomach) spaghetti sauce and tuna did not go together although my mother assured me that fish in pasta sauce is very common in Italian households. From that point on, for many years, I couldn’t eat tuna fish. I probably shouldn’t have been able to eat pasta sauce either but since we’re Italian, and pasta graced our table at least twice a week, I couldn’t give that up.
Flash forward about 8 years, and we’re living in New Hampshire, and I decided it was time to try tuna again. Don’t ask me why, but I wanted a tuna sandwich, so I went to the pantry, got a can of tuna opened it and gagged. It was tuna packed in OIL – ewww gross. Again being raised to waste not want not, I tried everything in my power to wash the oil off of the tuna. It didn’t work, but I made my sandwich, ate it and you got it, promptly tossed it.
What does this have to do with anything you might ask? Well I’ll tell you, that’s how powerful the mind is. I convinced myself not once, but on two separate occasions that something that I used to love was disgusting. The mind is a powerful thing indeed, and I’m starting to learn just how powerful. If we listen to our hearts, and apply the power of our minds, there isn’t anything we can’t accomplish. So the next time you say “I can’t” give yourself the proverbial Gibbs Slap upside the head and say “I can,” because when it comes right down to it, yes, you can!
